Frequently Asked Questions
What is Osteopathy?
Osteopathy is a type of alternative medicine that focuses on the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of health problems by working with the structure and function of the body, particularly the musculoskeletal system. It is based on the principle that the body’s structure, (its bones, muscles and connective tissue) is reciprocally related to its function (its ability to heal and maintain health). Osteopaths incorporate hands-on techniques such as massage, stretching, and mobilisation to improve circulation, relieve pain and promote overall health and well-being.
Osteopathy takes a patient centred holistic approach, considering the body as a whole system that needs to be in balance for optimal health. This includes reflecting upon lifestyle and environmental factors that may be affecting a patient’s condition.
What is Medical Acupuncture?
Medical Acupuncture is a form of acupuncture performed by licensed physicians. It combines traditional Chinese acupuncture techniques with a Western medical understanding of anatomy, physiology and pathology.
Medical Acupuncture is used to treat a variety of conditions, including chronic pain, migraines, musculoskeletal issues and some neurological conditions. Practitioners integrate acupuncture into conventional medical treatments; inserting single use, sterile, fine needles into specific points on the body to stimulate nerves, muscles and connective tissue which can help alleviate pain, improve bodily functions and promote overall health and well-being.
What to expect on my first Osteopathic appointment?
Your initial appointment will consist of a thorough case history, listening and reflecting upon your presenting symptoms and collecting any relevant case information. A full examination will be completed, including any necessary orthopaedic tests. Subsequently, a working diagnosis shared and personalised hands-on treatment provided if appropriate. A full onwards treatment and management plan will be discussed and devised together with the patient, and relevant exercises and / or advice tailored to your individual needs will be recommended.
What to wear to an appointment?
For an Osteopathic appointment, it is best to wear comfortable, loose fitting clothing or gym wear that allows easy movement and modest access for the hands on treatment approaches. We prioritise your comfort and will strive to perform treatments through most clothing.
You are welcome to bring a chaperone or request one from the clinic if required.
